Part 3: Add a blog post to your website

Adding a blog post will keep your website fresh and will give a better opportunity for search engine optimised pages with lots of relevant content.

Step 1 : Start a new 'post'

From the WordPress dashboard

  • Select Posts, and click on ‘Add New’ either on the left hand side, or at the top of the page by the title ‘Posts’
  • On the new screen add a title to your blog post by entering text in the ‘Add Title’ field, and hit return

If you are given the option to use the ‘Divi Builder’ (not always turned on for all builds), you can use this to create a more complex page, however we recommend using the standard WordPress builder for most blog posts as it is more straightforward to use.

Step 2 : Add your content to the post

In the main window of the visual builder add your content. You can add basic formatting, links etc within this window.

* Please note, the content in this window will view differently when ‘published’ due to the websites site wide styles. You can preview how this will look in Step 5.

Step 3 : Add additional detail

Each website will differ in its overall design but your blog post may benefit from including ‘Categories’, ‘Tags’ or a ‘Featured Image’.

  • To add a category, go to the right hand side under the title ‘Categories’ and either select or write a new category
  • To add a new tag, go to the right hand side under the title ‘Tags’ and write a new tag. You can also select from commonly used ones using the box below.
  • To add a featured image, click on ‘Select Featured Image’ and either choose a suitable image from the image library, or upload a suitable image

* Please note – Tags and Categories are rarely necessary for smaller sites with very few posts. If you are unlikely to post very often, you could request for us to hide the date of the posts. Please ensure images uploaded are compressed (to improve page load) and saved with a file name relevant to the image (to support SEO).  If you are likely to use featured images, please ensure they are always the same dimension for every post. Ideally landscape layout 1200 x 628 pixels in dimension.

Step 4 : Add keywords and optimise

We have included in your build an SEO on page tool to assist with search engine optimisation.  This allows you to improve the likelihood of appearing for specific search terms related to your content.

  • Once you have chosen a keyword, the SEO tool will give you a score out of 100. In order to improve the score, you need to include the term in your content, in page titles, and other techniques. Please see the video for a demonstration.

* Please note – not all pages need to get a high score for SEO. Sometimes striving for a high score can make the page unreadable or irrelevant. It is only meant to be a guide.

Step 5 : Preview how your post looks

  • At any point you can save your post by clicking the button ‘Save Draft’ on the right hand side under ‘Publish’
  • You can also preview your post by clicking on the button ‘Preview’ under Publish’

Close this tab to return to the editing window

Step 6 : Publish your changes

In order to publish your page you can:

  • Click the blue ‘Update’ button

Step 7 : Quick edits

Another way to make quick changes to your posts is to:

  • View all posts by clicking on ‘Posts’ and then ‘All Posts’
  • Hover under a post title and clicks ‘Quick Edit’

In this section there are various different quick tweaks you can make to a page, including SEO changes, title, categories and tags. You can also turn on and off comments for your post here.
